Are Poodle mixes hard to groom?

I have a Poodle mixed with a Beagle. He sheds a lot, hates water, and runs away when I try to brush him. How can I make grooming him easier for us both? I'm tired of my dog looking so shaggy.

Poodle coats tend to get tangled and matted quickly due to their curly nature. However, Beagles tend to be easy to groom due to their short, straight coats. So, the groomability of your dog will likely depend on which breed he takes after more: curly or straight coat.

Since you say he is shaggy, I am guessing he likely tends toward the more curly Poodle coat. The best way I have found for my dog to enjoy brushing is to use a Grooming Glove like this one that "tricks" my dog into thinking she is getting petted when she is also getting brushed ;)

If you can teach him to enjoy brushing, working towards a daily routine would be ideal. Then, you can stay ahead of the more painful tangle and mat removals.

As a Goldendoodle owner myself, I can confidently agree with you that Poodle mixes are hard to groom! I try to stay on top of regular brushing, but for me there is not a great alternative to professional grooming. I have friends who avoid professional groomers by DIY'ing it, but that is a lot of time and energy. My groomer asks to see Goldendoodles every month, but that would be too expensive, so I try to draw out the visits to every 3 months or so by brushing as much as I can at home.
