My dog chews on wood, how can I get him to stop?

My dog loves to chew on wood. This is not limited to sticks outside. He also chews furniture. Yesterday, he chewed the corner off the coffee table! Why would he chew wood, and how can I stop this ASAP?

There's 4 common reasons dogs chew on wood:
  1. Dogs like to chew on things and wood is readily available outside and easy to get in the wild, making sticks a common “chew toy.”
  2. They may enjoy the taste of it.
  3. Maybe it’s just out of boredom or fixation, like adults chewing gum.
  4. A dog chewing wood could mean a nutrient deficiency (similar to why dogs eat grass).
The stick in the yard are removable, but the furniture in your house is obviously not. Have you tried giving him a chew toy?
